Floating Stairs Richmond Hill

Transform Your Richmond Hill Property with Custom Floating Stairs

Richmond Hill homeowners come to us with questions before they come with a design brief. That’s by design on our part: a floating staircase touches structure, code, materials, and budget all at once, and most of the cost surprises in this kind of project come from questions that were never asked early enough. Below, we answer the ones we hear most often from Richmond Hill clients, alongside a real project we completed in the city. This work is part of our broader Custom Staircase Toronto services across the GTA.

Project Spotlight: Three-Storey Renovation, Richmond Hill

The home was an existing three-storey residence undergoing a full interior renovation for a private client. The original closed staircase ran through all three levels, and the scope called for a complete floating replacement connecting all floors with a consistent design language from the ground floor to the top level.

The structural approach used a double-stringer side-plate system on each run, fabricated in matte black steel and anchored into the existing floor framing at each level. Working across three storeys meant coordinating the steel installation sequence carefully so that upper floors remained accessible throughout the renovation.

Treads are wood-look composite, chosen specifically for this project to avoid the maintenance and refinishing cycle that solid hardwood requires over multiple floors of daily traffic. The guard system is frameless tempered glass with core-drilled standoff mounts, paired with an angled black handrail bolted directly through the glass panels.

Total project time across all three floors: 10 working days, including final polish and detailing.

Structural Systems We Use in Richmond Hill Projects

  • Double-Stringer (Side-Plate): Two steel plates run along both sides of the treads, anchored to floor framing above and below. This was the system used in the project above and is our most common solution for multi-storey homes since it adapts well to varying floor conditions at each level.
  • Mono-Stringer (Cantilever): A single steel spine with treads cantilevered off one side. Requires a structural wall or beam on that side and produces the most minimal visual result.
  • Hidden Spine: The steel structure is enclosed within a finished wall, leaving only the treads visible. Best suited to renovations where the wall can be opened and rebuilt around the stair structure.

Ontario Building Code Requirements

All floating stair installations in Richmond Hill fall under the Ontario Building Code, Division B, Part 9 for residential construction. Key figures that affect design:

  • Minimum tread depth: 235 mm
  • Maximum riser height: 200 mm
  • Minimum stair width: 860 mm clear of handrails
  • Guard height: 865 mm to 965 mm above tread nosing
  • Guard openings: no gap may allow a 100 mm sphere to pass through

We design to these figures from the first drawing and coordinate permit documentation with the City of Richmond Hill as part of our process.

FAQs About Floating Stairs in Richmond Hill

Pricing depends on the structural system, materials, and number of floors involved. A single-floor straight run with wood treads and a frameless glass guard starts from $19,000. Multi-storey projects, like the three-floor renovation above, start from $35,000 depending on the number of runs and floors connected. We provide a fixed quote after the site assessment, not a range that leaves room for surprises later.

Yes, in nearly all cases. The City of Richmond Hill requires a building permit for stair replacement or new stair construction under the Ontario Building Code, since the work involves structural changes. We advise on permit requirements specific to your property during the free site assessment and can prepare the documentation needed for submission.

Yes, with proper sequencing. In the Richmond Hill project above, we phased the steel installation floor by floor so that upper levels stayed accessible to the rest of the renovation crew throughout the project. This kind of sequencing is standard for us in multi-storey work and is something we plan during the design stage, not improvised on site.

Yes, when designed correctly. The key is proper tread depth, spacing and alignment. A well-built floating staircase should feel just as comfortable and natural to use as a traditional one.

Wood-look composite is the most maintenance-friendly option we install. It resists moisture and daily wear without the periodic refinishing that solid hardwood needs, which matters most in homes with multiple floors or heavy daily traffic. Solid white oak or maple remain the right choice if you want a natural wood look and grain variation, but they do require occasional refinishing over the life of the staircase.
